The potato, Canada’s leading vegetable crop.
Potatoes have been an important part of Canada’s agricultural industry for over 150 years.
Today, the potato is grown from coast to coast, and is our most valuable vegetable crop. In 2009, Canadian growers produced 146,000 hectares of potatoes, with a total yield of 4.5 million tonnes.
Canadian growers produce over 150 different varieties to meet the requirements of every market, including russetted, round white, red skinned and yellow fleshed varieties. Our tissue culture-based seed multiplication system allows us to introduce and commercialize new varieties quickly in response to changing market conditions.
